Concussion Testing Device
A saliva-based device that detects concussion injuries, for example in athletes during a match, developed with the client from concept through to mass manufacture.
About the project
We developed a device that detects whether someone has suffered a concussion injury, for example athletes during a sports match. It works in a similar way to a COVID test: a saliva sample is collected on a swab, the cap is screwed into the device to squeeze the saliva out, and the sample is analysed internally, with the result shown through a window in the device. The product was designed in close collaboration with the client, and the first order is for 5,150,000 units.

Sourcepro covered every step from concept to manufacture: initial concept ideas, liaison with clinicians, laboratory experts, moulders and the client, CAD design development and design for manufacture. The dimensions had to be very accurate, so the parts are injection moulded in high-quality engineering plastics, polycarbonate and silicone, and the design complies with biocompatibility standards ISO-10993-1 and USP Class VI. Translucent working prototypes were produced so technicians could see what happens inside the device during testing.
